PERFORM! is a thematic framework over the competition and festival program of the 16th edition of the Videonale ̶ Festival for video and time-based art forms.
The performance as an artistic act was in its beginnings an act of liberation - a rejection of traditional roles and expectations of the art system. Today, on the other hand, performance stands less and less for a freedom of expression than for a command for action. Through our continuous interaction with digital terminals, in which we leave our traces, the constant call for the self-presentation of the individual in the net, and for self-optimization as an economic subject, our life becomes consciously or unconsciously to a permanent performance. Our movements become choreographies in the public space, which we can only condition ourselves.
This implies, on the one hand, constellations of control and compulsion, but on the other hand also completely new possibilities of participation in social, political and artistic processes, interaction, communication and manipulation, which can be made creatively usable. The boundaries between real and virtual space, performers and the public, observers and observers are blurring. How does this affect our relationships and communication, our interaction as a social and political subject, our actions in the public?
What impact does the performative imperative have on our perception of body and mind? When are we performers, when an audience, or even a choreographer? When is performance just another word for adjustment, control and response? And finally, when and how is it still an expression of experimental, creative and sometimes subversive action?
Reflections on these questions will be presented by VIDEONALE.16 both in their exhibition and in the discursive part of the festival program.
